Beautifully presented too..and the gravy was such good quality. Lovely dinner that accompanied our bottle of red wine. Very reasonably priced too. Lots of people eating which is always a good sign. On arrival with our 2 dogs we were greeted by the... read more fantastic friendly staff who gave us a table with some space and promptly attended to the dogs with a bowl of water and a biscuit whilst we perused the menu, felt very spoiled for choice, everything is homemade by the talented chefs by also offering gluten free choices, I had a chicken and cider pie which was so huge I couldn't finish it but got to take the remainder away with us, my husband had steak and kidney pie which he devoured in minutes. Both Tom and Shanice were very friendly and helpful, making you feel very welcomed. They went above and beyond all aspects of their service. They were 2 of the most amazing bar persons I've ever met. It was a true pleasure to be in their pub.
It my have been our first time to The Crown and Anchor but it certainly won't be the last.
The food was delicious and plentiful. You couldn't get anymore tuna mayo into my sandwich, it was bursting and with a side order of proper chips, thick, crispy and full of fluffy potato.
Nothing was too much trouble, and you could see they enjoyed their jobs, making sure you had everything you needed, without it being too much. The locals ate friendly and very chat which gives the pub a cosy friendly and inviting atmosphere.

  We have to travel to Winchester once a year for work and found this gem of a pub last time we were there. Looked on the menu outside, but there... read more didn't seem much of a vegetarian offering, but my guest was happy with the one dish available, so we went in about 6pm. Greeted by a lovely lady with amazing blue hair and a big smile. She was happy to recommend one of their gins (honey) which I'd never had before an she very promptly brought our drinks to the table. Then she stayed and chatted for a while, which is always nice when you're not from the area.
When I mentioned that my dining companion was a vegetarian, she brought out a completely different 'vegan and vegetarian menu', which they really should advertise outside as we nearly went elsewhere when we thought there wasn't much veggie stuff on offer.
I had the lamb shank with seasonal veg and my friend had the Mediterranean bean pie, with chips and veg. Both meals looked and tasted AMAZING! and they were huge!!! There was no way we could have eaten a pudding, we only just managed to eat the main course and we consider ourselves to have quite big appetites.
Chef came out and had a chat too, we told him how nice is was to have decent fresh veg and very nicely cooked they were too. What a nice chap.
Can't fault the place, will definitely be back next time we are in Winchester.

All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and made you feel like a truly valuable customer.

Tastiest mulled wine I’ve ever had, and the food was a very generous portion. Definitely recommend a visit here.
